Below the waterline
Hull / karina, keel, rudder & skeg, through-hulls and seacocks (every one is a potential sinking point — know their locations and keep soft wooden bungs), propeller (shaft or saildrive).
Deck & cockpit
Coachroof, cockpit, helm, lifelines / stanchions, pulpit (bow) & pushpit (stern), cleats, anchor locker, windlass.
The rig
Spars: mast, boom, spreaders. Standing rigging (holds the mast up): forestay, backstay, cap & lower shrouds, tensioned via turnbuckles to chainplates. Running rigging (moves things): halyards raise sails; sheets trim them; plus outhaul, vang/kicker, cunningham, topping lift, reefing lines, furling line.
Sails
Mainsail, headsail (jib/genoa), optional spinnaker/gennaker; battens stiffen the main; telltales show airflow attachment — your primary trim feedback.
Engine & systems
Diesel engine, fuel system (tank → primary filter / water separator → secondary filter → injectors), raw-water cooling (intake → strainer → impeller → heat exchanger → exhaust), 12/24 V electrics (start + house banks, isolation switches, charging, panel), freshwater, bilge + pumps, marine heads + holding tank, LPG galley.
Instruments
Depth, speed log, wind, GPS/chartplotter, VHF + DSC, AIS, autopilot, compass.
